Always wear gloves and safety glasses when handling broken glass., Dispose of broken glass in a puncture-resistant container., Ensure the ladder or stool used is stable if working on a high window., Use caution with sharp tools like utility knives and putty knives.
Put on heavy-duty gloves and safety glasses to protect from sharp glass edges. Carefully remove all loose and broken glass pieces from the window frame. Use a putty knife and utility knife to remove old glazing putty and glazing points. Clean the window frame thoroughly to remove debris, dust, and old sealant. Measure the height and width of the window opening to determine glass size. Purchase a replacement glass pane cut to your measured dimensions. Dry fit the new glass pane into the frame to ensure proper sizing. Apply a thin layer of glazing putty around the inside edge of the frame. Gently place the new glass pane into the frame, pressing it into the putty. Insert glazing points every 6 inches to hold the glass securely in place. Apply a second layer of glazing putty over the edges of the glass. Smooth and shape the putty with a putty knife for a clean, angled finish. Allow the glazing putty to cure fully, typically for several days. Inspect the frame for any damage and fill cracks with wood filler if needed. Once the putty is cured, paint or seal the putty and frame to protect from moisture. Clean the new glass with a non-abrasive cleaner and soft cloth. Dispose of broken glass and old materials safely in a sturdy container. Check the window for proper operation and seal integrity after installation.
