Wear safety goggles when cutting or drilling wood., Use gloves to protect hands from splinters and sharp tools., Work in a well-ventilated area when applying stain or paint., Secure wood pieces with clamps before drilling or screwing.
Measure and mark the wood boards according to your desired planter box dimensions. Use a saw to cut the wood pieces to the measured lengths carefully. Sand all edges and surfaces of the wood to remove splinters and rough spots. Arrange the side panels and ends to form a rectangular frame on a flat surface. Apply wood glue at the joints and clamp the pieces together for stability. Drill pilot holes and secure the frame with wood screws at each corner. Cut and attach the bottom panel to the frame using screws and glue. Drill several drainage holes in the bottom panel to allow water to escape. Wipe off dust and apply an exterior wood stain or paint for weather protection. Allow the stain or paint to dry completely before proceeding. Cut landscape fabric to fit the interior of the box and line it evenly. Staple or tack the fabric in place to prevent soil from escaping. Place the planter box in its final location before adding soil. Fill the box with potting soil suitable for your chosen plants. Water the soil lightly to settle it before planting. Plant your desired flowers, herbs, or vegetables in the soil. Add mulch on top if desired to retain moisture. Wipe off any excess soil or debris from the outside of the box. Inspect the box periodically for signs of wear or rot. Reapply stain or paint annually to extend the life of the planter box.
