Always turn off power at the breaker before working on electrical appliances., Use a voltage tester to confirm power is off before touching wires., Wear gloves to protect hands from sharp edges and debris., Ensure the disposal is securely mounted to prevent it from falling during installation.
Turn off power to the garbage disposal at the circuit breaker and verify it is off using a voltage tester. Place a bucket under the sink to catch any water and disconnect the drain pipes from the disposal. Loosen the mounting ring and twist the old disposal unit off the mounting bracket. Disconnect the electrical wires from the old disposal, noting their configuration for the new unit. Remove the old mounting assembly from the sink if replacing, and clean the sink flange area thoroughly. Apply plumber’s putty around the new sink flange and press it firmly into the sink drain opening. Install the new mounting ring and bracket assembly according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Connect the new disposal to the mounting ring by aligning and twisting it into place until secure. Reconnect the drain pipes, ensuring all connections are tight and properly aligned. Connect the electrical wires to the new disposal, matching black to black, white to white, and ground to ground. Secure the wire connections with wire connectors and wrap with electrical tape for added safety. Tighten all mounting and pipe connections, checking for any loose fittings. Remove any excess plumber’s putty from around the sink flange. Turn on the water and run it through the disposal to check for leaks at all connections. If leaks are found, tighten the connections or reapply plumber’s putty as needed. Restore power at the breaker and turn on the disposal to test its operation. Run water while testing the disposal to ensure proper drainage and grinding function. Listen for unusual noises and check for vibrations that may indicate improper installation. Double-check all connections one last time to ensure everything is secure and leak-free. Clean up the work area and dispose of the old unit according to local regulations.
