Park the car on a flat, level surface and turn off the engine. Engage the parking brake to prevent the vehicle from moving. Allow the engine to cool for at least 30 minutes to avoid burns. Use a car jack to lift the front of the vehicle safely. Place jack stands under the car for stable support before working underneath. Wear gloves and safety glasses to protect your hands and eyes from hot oil and debris. Position the oil drain pan directly under the oil drain plug. Use a socket wrench to carefully remove the oil drain plug and let the oil drain completely. Allow the oil to drain for several minutes until it slows to a drip. Use an oil filter wrench to remove the old oil filter by turning it counterclockwise. Check that the old oil filter gasket is not stuck to the engine block. Apply a thin layer of new oil to the gasket of the new oil filter. Install the new oil filter by hand, tightening it snugly but not over-tightening. Reinstall the oil drain plug and tighten it securely. Torque to manufacturer specification. Wipe any spilled oil from the area with a rag or paper towel. Lower the car carefully back to the ground using the jack. Remove the oil filler cap and insert a funnel to pour in new engine oil. Add the recommended amount and type of oil for your vehicle. Use the dipstick to check the oil level and ensure it is within the proper range. Start the engine and let it run for a minute, then check for leaks under the car.
